and supported my campaign. I could never have done this
without each and every one of you.

Particular thanks go to Daniel Tamm for bringing this campaign together – providing the creative ideas, training the organizers and maintaining the energy throughout. The campaign’s success is due to his efforts.

Cindy Faith was the energetic source generating all the electronic communications.

I owe the website to Bryce Kobrin, for developing and maintaining it with everything else he had going on this year.

Mia Bortolussi was the gifted talent creating all the graphics and printed materials.

Harrison Homel and Andre Ross were the major volunteer organizers and were the backbone of the campaign. Much of the campaign’s success is a direct result of their leadership and hard work.

Betsy Connolly, Michelle Kobrin, Peg DeRose, Teri Smolarski and Sophia Fischer all oversaw various aspects of the campaign, including numerous details that I couldn’t keep track of. Their support has kept me going. I'd also like to thank Shelley Berman for his special voter outreach and thank you Ganelle and Lindsay for your conscientious and consistent efforts in contacting voters.

But, most especially, thank you to each one of you who contributed in the varied and myriad ways that make a political campaign possible and keep it going. From writing letters to phone banking to providing funds, I couldn’t have done it without you. I am truly grateful for what each person did and the effort that she or he gave. Together we have done a great thing!

Thank you.
Let us also remember police officers and firefighters who have fallen in the line of service. These men and women died because they cared about our country and her citizens; they cared about you and I.

I would like to especially remember members of our own community who have given their lives in service to their country. Their sacrifice is reminds us that each of us has a duty to serve our country and our communities in whatever capacity we can. Working together we can create opportunities for each other and build caring communities.
Elton Gallegly’s vote in the House of Representative regarding “Don’t Ask. Don’t Tell” legislation.

Oak Park, CA - The “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” legislation was passed almost a generation ago, at a time when it became clear that the right to serve in the military was being denied some citizens. It was a compromise between the civil rights of some individuals and principles that the military advocated. However, it has become apparent that a policy that orders people to lie about who they are is doomed to failure. Ultimately it does not stand the test of justice and equality for all - principles that our country is founded upon.

Elton Gallegly's "No" vote last night flies in the face of those principles. He would have us perpetuate institutionalized discrimination, as if nothing has changed in attitudes and circumstances surrounding the American public's awareness and acceptance of sexual orientation since 1993. Mr. Gallegly ignores the fact that on average 78% of those interviewed who served in Afghanistan and Iraq think that gay men and women ought to be allowed the right to openly serve in the military.

Despite Elton Gallegly and most of his Republican colleagues, the repeal of this legislation will allow the Pentagon to authoritatively, as General John Shalikashvili, Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has said, "have the maneuvering room... to end discrimination and maximize military readiness."Marie Panec - Panec4Congresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13135015077904454006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7370322887745665658.post-32198880538670074542010-05-27T15:17:00.000-07:002010-05-27T15:17:00.522-07:00"We urge Democrats to make Panec their choice. This organization is dedicated to encouraging women to seek elected office. NWPC members have been incredibly supportive of me and my campaign. (Recently, the national organization of NWPC endorsed my candidacy.) The highlight of the afternoon was the panel discussion by Carmen Ramirez (who also recently endorsed me), Robyn Ritter Simon, and Susan Rose regarding the issues and problems encountered by women seeking elected office. All three of these women are strong advocates of specifically encouraging and endorsing women who are seeking elected office. It was a great discussion on a lovely Ventura afternoon.
Elton Gallegly (CA-24) killed the “America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010”, (H.R.5116), two weeks after the House Science and Technology Committee approved it. Gallegly supported a “Motion to Recommit” at the end of last week, a last-ditch effort to change a bill by sending it back to the committee with mandatory instructions, introduced by Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX).

In a Democratic primary election that will begin this week as “vote-by-mail” ballots are distributed, former Senator Kuehl had this to say, "Marie Panec is simply the most courageous and qualified candidate in the Democratic primary election for Congress in the 24th district. There is no substitute for the proven governance experience gained by Marie during her two terms as an elected member of the Oak Park Unified School District Board of Education. She has found a way to balance budgets while developing and sustaining innovative solutions for maintaining high standards of education. As a respected professor of biology, Marie understands and is passionate about environmental sustainability, as well as the economic potential of biotech to create jobs in our region. Marie Panec has great integrity and will provide the 24th district with honest and responsive representation. I wholeheartedly support Marie Panec for Congress."

Responding to Kuehl’s endorsement, Democratic candidate, Marie Panec said, “I am honored by former Senator Kuehl. She represented this area in the Assembly and, more recently the State Senate, as one of the leading lights of social and economic justice for Californians. Her reputation for matching intellectual rigor with passionate advocacy is well known. Sheila Kuehl’s landmark legislation for single-payer health care in California is an inspiration to fair-minded people everywhere.”

“Our campaign is thrilled to receive Sheila’s endorsement,” said Panec.

Kuehl’s endorsement, added to that of Asm. Julia Brownley last week indicates a strengthening conviction among respected, leading Democrats that Marie Panec’s governance experience and longtime commitment to serving the community make her a force to be reckoned with and a viable candidate to challenge Elton Gallegly in the fall.Marie Panec - Panec4Congresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13135015077904454006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7370322887745665658.post-7318017074360538022010-05-09T16:41:00.000-07:002010-05-09T16:41:16.128-07:00Julia Brownley Endorses Marie for Congress!Oak Park, CA. Assemblywoman Julia Brownley (CA-AD 41) who serves as Chairwoman of the Education Committee of the California State Assembly, has endorsed Dr. Marie Panec, Democratic candidate for Congress in California’s 24th District Primary election on June 8, 2010.

According to ASM Brownley, "As a fellow school board member, Marie's experience, courage, and longtime commitment to the educational needs of our communities have served our constituents well. Her leadership will also serve us well in Congress."

Julia Brownley brings a rich understanding of educational issues gleaned during her 12 years on the board of education of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, including three terms as board president. AD 41 spans from Santa Monica in the south to Oxnard in the north.

Here is how Marie responded, "I am greatly honored to be endorsed by Assembly Member Julia Brownley. Her passionate leadership on education and the environment in California, even in these difficult budgetary times, is inspiring. World-class public education, environmental sustainability and creating meaningful jobs are all connected to our shared prosperity. It is my vision for our district and our country."

Marie has long been viewed as the political outsider and underdog in this race. An endorsement by a major Democratic local elected official is eye-opening. It is impossible to ignore that Marie brings a wealth of proven experience and qualifications, far beyond that of her opponents, in this Democratic primary election.Marie Panec - Panec4Congresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13135015077904454006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7370322887745665658.post-18879077537229030592010-05-06T08:42:00.000-07:002010-05-09T12:28:25.487-07:00NASA's Santa Susana Field Lab Clean-upI attended NASA’s information session on their clean-up of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory last night. The session was held as an open house, so the public could come and go at will. NASA had posters with lots of photos and data at half a dozen tables. NASA representatives were at each table to explain the studies that have been done and clean-up effort.

I was quite impressed. NASA has done quite a bit of work analyzing soil, water (both surface and underground), buildings, and ecosystem impact. They are working their way through the clean-up of soil on their part of the site and water for the whole site (Boeing owns part of the land, too). They are doing good science, and remediation to the extent that they can.

It is just a shame that it has taken this long to get this started. And, that Elton Gallegly has allowed this to fester in his backyard for all these years.Marie Panec - Panec4Congresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13135015077904454006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7370322887745665658.post-13691142391546739572010-05-03T07:24:00.000-07:002010-05-03T20:01:51.549-07:00Comprehensive Immigration ReformThe Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Community Forum held this past Friday was on immigration reform and led by Dr. Jose Alamillo, a professor at CSUCI. Dr. Jose Alamillo was enlightening and shared compelling reasons that our country urgently needs comprehensive immigration reform. About 50 people were in attendance and the questions afterwards showed the diversity of perspectives on the issue. All agreed that reforming the current system was essential.

HR 4321 introduced by Congressman Gutierriez this past December attempts to address immigration reform at multiple levels. As terrible as it is, perhaps the recent Arizona legislation will serve to push the issue of immigration to the forefront and move the bill for comprehensive immigration forward.
Re: Marie Panec’s April 11 column, “Healthcare bill a good first step”:

Panec correctly reminds us that the “party of no” had eight years to do something about healthcare, and the subject was never even introduced. I would also agree that the recently passed healthcare bill is a good first step, but more work needs to be done.

I can’t tell you how happy I am that Marie has thrown her hat into the ring. At this critical point in our country’s history, our district needs more than a puppet that walks in lockstep with GOP leaders who have decided that they need to double-down on obstruction. Rep. Elton Gallegly has proved that he is business as usual in Washington. Marie Panec has my vote.

I have had the honor of calling Marie a colleague at Moorpark College. I have worked on college governance committees with Marie, and I have witnessed first-hand her dedication, intelligence and stanch advocacy for our students. I know her to be fair and honest, and astonishingly well-prepared on all matters at the local and state level.

If you don’t know Marie, I urge you to get to know her. Shake her hand and look her in the eyes and see for yourself the commitment and passion that Marie has for the people of California. I know our students have benefited from Marie’s advocacy. I have no doubt that she will represent the people of our district with the same passion and integrity.
I was assigned middle school microbiology projects. The quality of the projects was amazing. Students were required to design and perform a project using the scientific method, present their project in a poster display, prepare a written research report, and orally present their project to the judges. I was particularly impressed by the presentation skills of students at this level. They performed far better than I could have at their age.
The primary election.is on June 8, 2010.

CNA/NNOC is a professional association that represents 86,000 registered nurses throughout the nation.

In announcing the endorsement, Malinda Markowitz RN, co-president of the organization, said, “We are impressed with Marie Panec’s depth of experience and devoted service to the community. She’s got true character and compassion.”

Markowitz went on to say, “We trust Marie’s strong commitment to education through her work with students as both a college professor and a School Boardmember. We share Marie’s values based vision of treating healthcare as a right and making it available to all. We believe that Marie will do an excellent job in representing California’s 24th District on education, health, labor, environmental and women's issues.

Panec had this to say in response, “I am thrilled to be endorsed by the California Nurses. They are staunch advocates on behalf of nurses and working families. They’ve been on the forefront of protecting patients’ rights and tenacious on single payer healthcare. Providing universal access to healthcare is not only consistent with American values, it is just plain common sense.”
